The Gong'an county government in Hubei province has ordered its staff to smoke 230,000 packs of Hubei-produced cigarette brands a year. If they fail to meet their target lung destruction level they will be monetarily penalized. This is all in the name of selling more cigarettes which are made in the county in an attempt to boost the local economy via the cigarette tax.
On the other hand, another study says that China has 350 million smokers, of whom a million die of smoking-related diseases every year. More than half of all male doctors in China smoke , but the government is now trying harder to get them to kick the habit in order to set an example for others.
This comes as no surprise to me in a country that never ceases to amaze me with the ridiculous regulations they put in place for seemingly very shady reasons. I won't complain, eventually they'll kill off their whole work force and will defeat their own rising super-power status so hey, smoke away China. While you're at it, why not have unprotected sex with dirty people, then you can boost the local drug market by selling more genital herpes drugs to control your outbreaks. Or you could promote more speeding so you can boost local economy by fining speeders. The possibilities are endless when you're as fucked up as China. Keep setting an example for the world china!
